Abstract
Several growing media made of sphagnum peat blended with different additives were evaluated in respect to their physical properties and influence on bedding plant growth.
The additives included perlite, sand, vermiculite or poliamine foam.
The media were used in production of: Tagetes erecta, Salvia splendens, Bacopa SuteraNova, Scaevola aemula and Verbena hybrida Tapien.
All investigated media showed their usefulness in bedding plant production with satisfying results, but the growth was most intensive in the mixture of medium structured white peat and black peat 1:1. Its bulk density was very low, it had very high porosity, easy available water and air-filled pore space.
The additives to the peat did not improve quality of the medium or plant growth.
