Abstract
Cut rose and tomato were grown in substrates made of different peat types.
After 16 months of cultivation, the total yields harvested from rose plants grown in light Sphagnum peat (H2, von Post), Carex peat, commercial rose peat growing board and rockwool did not differ significantly from each other.
The lower yield and quality of flowers harvested from plants grown in Eriophorum Sphagnum peat and decomposed Sphagnum peat (H6) can possibly be explained by the watering and fertilization difficulties during cultivation.
The volume of Carex peat and decomposed Sphagnum peat diminished less than 5%. All other media shrank 10-20%. No differences could be found between tomato yields when tomato was grown in light Sphagnum peat (H2), Carex peat and Eriophorum Sphagnum peat.
Some physical characteristics of the different peat types are defined.
