Abstract
Constituents of growing media and mixtures thereof have been studied intensively.
Chemical and physical properties have been defined.
The study of the microbiology of growing media, however, is still in its infancy but with growing scientific and practical interest.
Biostimulants and biocontrol agents are being introduced to the market and into various fields of application, in some cases without proven effectiveness.
Nevertheless, reduction of the use of pesticides, fertilizers and chemicals in general is part of integrated crop management of which microbiological products incorporated into growing media are gradually becoming a part.
Major obstacles and drawbacks are evident when applying some microbiological products.
These statements are based on a trial in which the biocontrol agent FO47, an antagonistic microorganism (non-pathogenic Fusarium oxysporum strain), was incorporated into a standard growing medium to suppress the inoculated pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cyclaminis. The need for research and development is discussed.
Growing interest in biological aspects of growing media is also due to the increasing awareness of microbiological differences between organic growing media constituents even of the same type but different origin.
Selection of organic growing medium constituents based on the microbial composition of constituents might become another means to help formulate growing media in the future.
