Abstract
The Closed Insulated Pallet System (CIPS) is a continuous subirrigation-capillary system where water moves upward from the reservoir to the root medium and roots in response to plant uptake.
Individual plants are placed in pouched-media of 1:1 vermiculite: peat moss (v:v). Fertilizers are applied at the peripheral upper surface of root substrate.
The aim of the investigation was to directly compare several determinate tomato cultivar’s growth and yield irrigated with two water qualities (0 vs. 1 g•L-1 CaCl2 + 3.5 g•L-1 NaCl) grown in CIPS with that in a conventional open container system (OCS) with water applied to the open top surface and drainage from the open bottom surface of the medium.
The experiments were conducted under greenhouse growing conditions.
In CIPS, tomato growth and yield were much greater than in OCS regardless of water quality.
