Abstract
By the time the first crop is maturing and ready for harvest growers have a huge investment at stake.
This is not only in the cost of the greenhouse, irrigation system, environment control system but also in the crop that may have taken many months to grow from expensive stock.
How many growers recognise and quantify the full risk of a crop failure at this stage and take reasonable steps to protect their investment?
As a supplier of greenhouse equipment for many years I have been astounded by the cavalier approach taken by many who have readily put their whole livelihood at stake when, with a little forethought and effort, the potential risks could easily be mitigated.
This paper presents an analysis of the possible risks to a grower from a variety of causes such as equipment failure, power disturbance or failure, or water supply failure.
It provides a common sense approach to risk assessment and minimisation balanced against a sensible human effort and financial costs.
