Abstract
Trials were undertaken to increase the efficiency and repeatability of the results of chemical thinning.
Results of the experiments conducted during four years (1996-2000) with apple cultivars Gala, Jonagold, Elstar, Golden Delicious and Lobo are presented.
Benzyladenine (BA) was used in the form of the Hungarian preparation Paturyl.
This compound was applied by spraying the trees after bloom, on fruits 10-12 mm in diameter.
The preparation was used on trees treated with ethephon at the beginning of bloom, or with ATS (ammonium thiosulfate) at full bloom, or with NAA soon after bloom.
Also, mixtures (in one tank) of BA and carbaryl, BA and NAA, and BA and urea were applied to fruits 10 mm in diameter.
Low doses of the preparations were used for the joint applications.
Trees thinned using each preparation separately, trees not thinned and those thinned by hand were used for comparison.
The results show that late spraying with BA often intensified abscission of fruitlets, caused further increase in fruit size and improved firmness and °Brix of apples.
Also, it sometimes corrected fruit shape on trees thinned earlier using other thinners.
The use of mixtures of BA and carbaryl, or BA and NAA, deserves special attention.
Urea, however, had no effect on the efficiency of BA.
