MONITORING INK DISEASE OF CHESTNUT WITH THE AIRBORNE MULTISPECTRAL SYSTEM A.S.P.I.S.

Abstract
The airborne multispectral system, A.S.P.I.S., for high radiometric resolution and digital images acquisition was tested for its potential in identifying ink disease foci in natural and cultivated chestnut stands in Central Italy.
Multispectral images were acquired from over 2500 hectares of chestnut forest where a number of infection foci were previously identified through ground activities and reported on a GIS. The same infection foci were easily recognized by the multispectral images.
The image definition can distinguish trees at different degrees of crown decline.
The potential of application of A.S.P.I.S. for ink disease monitoring is currently under validation: putative ink disease foci are individualized on geo-referenced multispectral images and their presence verified through ground monitoring activities.
