Abstract
The influence of stable manure and mineral fertilizer NPK 5-20-30 upon the status of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in soil, their accumulation in plants, and yield of red head chicory (Cichorium intybus var. foliosum Hegi) were determined in the period from 1999 to 2001, on two locations in Croatia, ecologically very suitable for the vegetable crops production.
Area selection followed detailed preliminary soil investigations.
Trials were carried out according to the Latin design in five treatments: stable manure 5 kg m-2, three rates of complex mineral fertilizer NPK 5-20-30 (50, 100, and 150 g m-2), and an unfertilized control.
Due to the strong influence of agroecological conditions, no significant differences in plant nitrogen contents were recorded.
Results of different fertilizers application indicate that, irrespective of the year and location, the highest content of phosphorus and potassium in soil, potassium in plant as well as the highest yield were achieved with 100 and 150 g m-2 mineral fertilizer NPK 5-20-30. From the agroecological point of view, we can conclude that fertilization with 100 g m-2 NPK 5-20-30 is rational and sufficient for chicory production, and that potassium plays an especially important role for an efficient production of red head chicory.
