Abstract
The main objectives of this work were to: 1) study genetic variation among- and within- populations, and 2) study the genetic x environment interaction.
A provenance-progeny test of common walnut (Juglans regia L.) was planted at two sites (Mas Valero in Northeastern Spain and Nullán in Northwestern Spain) in 2001. Each of the two sites contained from ten to thirteen open-pollinated families from each of four local populations: Burgohondo, LaGuingueta, Pedroso and Valadouro. At both sites walnut-trees were assessed for survival, growth (total height, root-collar diameter), phenology (bud burst, frost damage and leaf fall) and growth habit (stem form and apical dominance) at the first three growing seasons.
Significant differences (p<0.001) were found between sites for all traits, but survival.
At the end of the third growing season total height was three times higher at Mas Valero than at Nullán.
Significant differences (p<0.001) were found among populations for growth and phenological traits, while no significant differences were found among populations for survival, stem form and apical dominance.
Heritabilities for population means (hp2) were over 0.70 for growth traits and leaf fall. Valadouro was the most vigorous population at both sites, while Pedroso had the best third growing season growth increments at the Mas Valero site.
At the best performance site (Mas Valero), significant differences were found among families within populations for growth, growth increment, leaf fall and survival.
However, at Nullán, where walnut-trees had worse performance, no differences were found among families within populations, except for second growing season growth.
