Abstract
The purpose of this research was to determine the amount of material deposited on apple (Malus × domestica) trees sprayed with nutrients and other chemicals in Chile.
Two experiments were conducted.
The first study examined leaf deposits of zinc (Zn) after two sprays of a Zn-containing product were applied to ‘Royal Gala’ and ‘Red Chief Delicious’ apple trees.
The results demonstrated that leaf Zn concentration increased by approximately 30 mg kg-1 after a single application.
Based on a leaf area index (LAI) of 3.5, the efficiency of this application would be about 70%. The second study examined deposition of Surround, a product used for sunburn damage control, on ‘Fuji’ and ‘Braeburn’ apple fruit and leaves.
Five sprays were applied, with a total application rate of 175 kg ha-1. The proportion of sprayed Surround recovered from the leaves varied between 46 and 57%, while recovery from the fruit was less than 3%. The results were used to estimate theoretical fruit, leaf and wood retention of nitrogen (N), Zn and calcium (Ca) based on application rate, spray volume, number of sprays, crop load, and LAI.
