Abstract
Current brix yields tend to be about 5 t/ha in processing tomato crops.
It is postulated that using existing knowledge, brix yields as high as 10 t/ha could be achieved.
This will involve the integration and fine tuning of a diverse range of scientific and agronomic skills including:
It is postulated that using existing knowledge, brix yields as high as 10 t/ha could be achieved.
This will involve the integration and fine tuning of a diverse range of scientific and agronomic skills including:
1) Modifying plant spacing and increasing bed width;
2) Improved crop nutrition;
3) Breeding cultivars with a high harvest index;
4) Harvesting the fruit at the optimum date;
5) Improvements in irrigation scheduling, particularly close to harvest.
These factors are considered independently and then in an integrative manner.
