Abstract
In Navarre (Spain), artichokes are mainly cultivated as an annual crop due to the markets demand for fresh stalks which are harvested in the spring.
The most usual planting time is at the beginning of August.
The plant spends the winter in rosette form, without producing heads, although there can also be some early planting that can be harvested in autumn, but this will result in a lower spring crop.
An early autumn crop is a very important aspect because a high market price is obtained for fresh artichokes at this time of year.
Due to the peculiar form of propagation using stalks, the initial taking-root, particularly in high temperatures, is the most important problem related to this crop, not only because it can be a difficult and uneven process, but also because of the economic losses that it can cause.
In warm climate areas, there is a trend to bring forward planting so as to obtain an earlier crop.
This work analyzes the influence of planting time on the taking-root process, earliness and yield of Blanca de Tudela in four different planting dates (from early July till the end of August). It has been observed that in early planting, the failure percentage was high, which means an important decrease in the total crop, even if the autumn yield was high.
The winter frost also had a negative influence on early planted crops, mainly affecting plants in which harvesting had already started.
