AFLP ANALYSIS OF FOUR WILD MALUS MILL.

Abstract
Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers were used to assess polymorphism in wild Malus. Three primer pairs detected a total of 228 AFLP fragments in 27 accessions of mostly Malus hupehensis Rehd., M. baccata Borkh, M. toringoides (Rehd.) Hughes and M. sieboldii Rehd.
Up to 216 fragments (94.7%) were polymorphic.
UPGMA analysis identified two clades: an M. toringoides clade of mixed ploidy levels and a mixed clade containing the remaining species.
This study supports the close relationship between M. sieboldii, M. baccata and M. hupehensis and agrees with previous morphological characterization, flavonoid and isozymes analyses.
