Abstract
Two durian cultivars, Monthong and Chanee, were investigated in vivo assisted post-pollination processes in pistil and fruit set percentages of self-pollination and reciprocal crossing.
Pollens of each cultivar germinated normally on both stigmas and grew healthily inwards, and the percentages of penetrated ovules among all treatments were over 40%. However, the fruit set of self pollinated Chanee was extremely low.
The fruit set percentage of self pollination flowers at 35 d after pollination (DAP) of Chanee was 0% in 2002 and 2003 whilst that of Monthong was 6.9% in 2002, and 23.6% in 2003. The fruit set percentages of cross pollination treatment were significantly higher than either of the above.
According to the pollen tube growth behaviors and non-synchronization dropping of the fruit between self-pollination and two crossing combinations, Monthong and Chanee durians might possess post-zygotic barriers for selfing, especially Chanee.
