OLIVE OIL ECONOMICS, MARKETING AND POLICIES IN TURKEY

Olive oil is a new fashion in diet of human being, during the last decade in Europe.
Many people are interested in olive oil as a foodstuff.
Price policies in Turkey are changing very rapidly.
Until 1999 production year, government declared supported price by TARIS Cooperative or Union of Marmara.
However, after year 2000, Turkish government did not support olive oil.
According to this, government started to pay prime system per kg of olive oil to the farmers. 2003-2004 years, Turkish government paid only 10 cents ($) per kg of olive oil as a prime of payment.
This amount of money is very low level of support, when it is compared with Greece, Italy and Spain.
Turkish government is paying direct payment to all farmers according to the ownerships of land.
The government paid approximately 100$ per ha of olive orchard as a direct payment in 2003. However, Turkish government is going to give up price support in 2006.
Marketing of olive oil is very important in Turkey.
Especially, domestic consumption of olive oil per capita is very low level when you compare with other Mediterranean Countries, such as Greece, Italy and Spain.
Therefore, domestic consumption of olive oil in Turkey must increase by doing campaigns of advertisement in order to improve consumption per capita in Turkey.
Consumption of olive oil is very low such as 1 lt per capita.
