Abstract
The first Acta Horticulturae reporting on protea research was published in 1986. This first meeting of the IPWG (International Protea Working Group) was held in conjunction with the third IPA conference.
The meeting was attended by 150 participants from 9 countries.
Since then there have been 6 more joint meetings between growers and researchers, at which a range of research topics have been presented.
Some insights into the changes that have occurred in the industry during these two decades and the contributions research has made to these developments will be discussed.
In our small, yet globally represented industry any funds devoted to research must deliver useful information to improve all aspects of production.
Yet there are many challenges to the adoption of new ideas, and changes in the source of research funds bring changes to topics researched.
Perhaps by understanding the ebb and flow of information in the past we can make the most of research in the future.
