ROOTING OF ONE YEAR AND SECOND YEAR OLD CLADODES OF CACTUS PEAR

Abstract
Propagation of cactus pear in a natural state is done by seeding and cutting.
This last way is the most employed because its easy to use and permit to produce plants which are genetically identical to plant mother.
In spite of the facility of cutting in cactus pear, it has still some problems regarding the type of cuttings to be used and the period of plantation.
The aim of this study is to compare the rooting of one-year and second-year old cladodes and also between one-year old cladodes that are planted in different positions: normal position, position punt counters the ground and reversed position.
The effect of period of plantation on one year old cladodes will be also determined.
Obtained results showed that one-year old cladodes have a high potential of rooting than those of two years: average number of roots emitted by pad was 43, 44 for one-year cladodes and only 15, 25 for the second-year ones.
Results of one year cladodes planted in different positions have given 41, 75 roots by pad for normal position, 29, 31 roots by pad for position punt against the ground, and only 19, 10 roots by pad for the reversed position.
For the period of plantation cladodes planted in winter have given the best results with 32, 38 roots by pad and those of autumn have given only 16, 13 roots by pad.
Average length of roots by pad was also determined for all the treatments.
