MANGO CULTIVAR STUDIES IN SOUTHERN MAINLAND SPAIN

The first mango plantings in Southern mainland Spain were established in the late 1980’s.
Since then 28 cultivars have been studied and rejected.
Only Osteen and Keitt are now considered of commercial interest.
Kensington, Maya, Irwin, Ataulfo and Kent look very promising, especially considering the tree ripe high quality market.
The last 7 cultivars have been compared over the period 2001–2004. Results on fruit weight, picking time, percentage red epidermis, percentage Ceratitis capitata attack, internal breakdown, stem end cavity, °brix and flavour are discussed.
Quality of fruits picked at three ripening stages, light green, early yellow and advanced yellow (tree ripe) are also shown.
