IMPROVING THE PERFORMANCE OF PELLETED CELERY SEEDS WITH GROWTH REGULATOR TREATMENTS

Abstract
Celery seeds fail to germinate in the dark when the temperature rises above about 18°C but this dormancy can be broken by treating the seeds with a mixture of the gibberellins A4 and A7 (GA4/7) and certain other growth regulators.
The inhibition of celery seed germination imposed by pelleting was alleviated by pre-pelleting growth regulator treatments.
A 48 h soak at 5°C in mixtures of GA4/7 (1000ppm) with either daminozide (4000ppm) or ethephon (1000ppm), followed by a 48 h drying back period, increased the percentage seed germination, rate of emergence and decreased the spread of emergence.
Treatments were particularly effective when used on seeds which were subsequently pelleted.
Although these effects were very pronounced in the glasshouse, a completely satisfactory treatment for celery sown directly in the field has not yet been discovered.
