Abstract
The role of seedling establishment in field vegetable production is discussed particularly in relation to the following effects: the plant population established, the time to emergence of the seedling population and the variability in times of emergence of individuals within the crop, on yield, the timing of harvests, and the uniformity of plant size and maturity.
Methods of improving seedling establishment for plant-raising in seedbeds or soil blocks and in the field by pre-sowing seed treatments and fluid sowing are discussed.
The use of plug-mix planting and mulching to improve seedling emergence under adverse conditions is also described.
