Abstract
Jaboticabas are native and very popular fruit trees in Brazil.
They belong to the genus Myrciaria (Myrtaceae), which includes Myrciaria jaboticaba Berg, called Sabará, and Myrciaria peruviana var. truncifolia Mattos, called Cabinho. The effect of three substrates (sand, vermiculite and Bioplant®) on the germination of the jaboticabas Sabará and Cabinho was studied.
An entirely randomized experimental design with four replications of 50 seeds, in a factorial outline 2 × 3 (two species and three substrates) was utilized.
The appraised characteristics were: germination (%); index of emergency speed; length of aerial part, radicule and total (cm). The germination of Cabinho was not significantly affected by the substrate, whereas vermiculite promoted better germination (77.0%) and better index of emergency speed (1.5213) of Sabará, which germination was higher than the one of Cabinho (38.0% and 0.6923, respectively). Initial seedlings grow of the two species was better on vermiculite. Sabará appear to have higher poliembriony degree than Cabinho.
