TOMATO ANTIOXIDANTS AND YIELD AS AFFECTED BY DIFFERENT WATER SUPPLY

Abstract
A two years (2007 and 2008) open field experiment was conducted to study the effect of irrigation on the yield parameters and main antioxidant components (lycopene, phenolic compounds and ascorbic acid) of processing tomato.
Two different treatments were applied: regularly irrigated, irrigation cut-off 30 days before harvest, compared with rainfed control.
The optimal water supply was calculated from the average daily temperature.
Fruits were harvested at red ripe maturity stage during two consecutive years.
The irrigated plants gave a significantly higher yield, and rainfed plants showed a yield loss.
Better water supply caused lower °Brix, but higher Brix yield per hectare, than rainfed control.
In both years, the antioxidant concentrations showed decrease with irrigation, except for ascorbic acid content of tomato fruit.
Irrigation had a significant positive effect on the antioxidant yield per hectare.
There was a strong positive correlations between the total marketable yield and Brix yield (r=0.95; 0.99), ascorbic acid yield (r=0.98; 0.93) lycopene yield (r=0.79; 0.91) and phenolic compounds yield (r=0.90; 0.94) in both years.
Harvested fruit number per hectare and average fruit weight also showed positive correlations with Brix yield in 2008 (r=0.89; 0.62). We observed significant positive correlation between ascorbic acid yield (r=0.74; 0.85) and average fruit weight in both yield.
