Abstract
Since the 1990s many researches have tried to set up a system to measure whole canopy gas exchange.
Efforts of several Italian Universities (Bologna and Piacenza, and later Firenze, which improved the first prototypes)successfully achieved an affordable system to measure the whole canopy, respecting the natural conditions of the canopy itself.
The system, comprising several plastic balloons containing the whole canopy, has subsequently been improved for data collection and automation.
The Horticulture Department of the University of Florence set up an instrument (P.A.CO2 Plant Analyzer for CO2) to collect automatically all the data.
Customized software manages both hardware and mechanical parts function as well as data collection.
Data acquired from this system, integrating the whole canopy conditions, are very useful to evaluate canopy efficiency (relationship between intercepted light and dry matter gained by the canopy) as affected by environmental conditions, as well as management practices, such as soil management, summer pruning and, mainly, irrigation.
The last generation systems enable one to manage small portions of a leaf canopy or to manage species with very small canopies.
