Abstract
Although most commercial cultivars of Japanese plum are self-incompatible, there are some self-compatible cultivars, which have a horticultural advantage because no cross-pollinator is required.
In this study, selection of self-compatible progenies with high fruit quality was conducted.
DNA was isolated from leaves of the seedlings obtained from crosses among self-compatible cultivars with the Se-haplotype and crosses between these cultivars and self-incompatible cultivars. S-haplotypes of these seedlings were analyzed by PCR using S-RNase gene-specific primers.
Fruit set rates after self-pollination were recorded in the seedlings with the Se-haplotype.
Fruit characteristics of these seedlings were investigated.
Several seedlings with high rates of self-fruit set and good fruit quality were selected.
