Abstract
Southern Ontario is the northern end of the range of American chestnut (Castanea dentate). Since 2000, we have been breeding American chestnut with resistance to chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica). Initially, two populations of trees were produced: 1) with extant Canadian C. dentate trees hybridized with partially resistant trees from Connecticut; and 2) with extant Canadian C. dentate trees open pollinated or hybridized with known Canadian trees.
The trees were planted at two sites near St.
George and Aylmer, Ontario.
Over a four-year period, inoculation with C. parasitica isolates has shown no difference between the two populations and two sites, although large differences were seen between individual trees.
This led us to conclude that we have trees with partial resistance and that our extant Canadian trees possess varying levels of resistance.
