Abstract
To study the role of specific genes whose products are required for the virulence of C. parasitica recently has been facilitated by the release of complete fungal genome information.
Presented below are members of two conserved families of proteins that may have implications for understanding fungal pathogenesis.
LysM proteins represent effectors that may be important for triggering plant defenses, while aquaporins are proteins that permit the passage of water and other small molecules across the hyphal membrane.
Examples of putative genes encoding these proteins from the C. parasitica genome are described below.
