Abstract
Bangladesh, a land of 143,998 sq. km. is situated in the north-eastern part of the South-Asian subcontinent roughly between 20.75° to 25.75° north latitude and from 88.30° to 92.75° east longitude.
Except for the hilly region in the north-east and south-east, and some areas of high lands in the northern parts, the country consists of low, flat and fertile land.
About one third of the vast low lying plain is subject to annual floods.
The country has a large population of about 84 million (population density of 583/sq. km.) in relation to a limited amount of available cultivable land.

The climate tends to remain mild due to the influence of the Bay of Bengal and the monsoon wind.
The annual rainfall varies from 1112 to 5096 mm with an average of 2076 mm.
Most of the rainfall (80%) is received during June to mid October, the second half of the hot season.
The hot season starts from mid February.
The winter (early November to mid February) is dry, and mean minimum temperatures during the season vary from 8°C to 13°C.
