Abstract
The Philippines consists of about 7 100 islands and islets stretching 1 851 km from north to south and 1 107 km from east to west at the base.
The entire island group is closely scattered within the zone bounded between 21°25′ North and 4°23′ North latitude and between 116° East and 127°East longitude.
It is 966 km off the southern coast of Asia, bounded on the north and east by the Pacific Ocean, on the west by the South China Sea and on the south by the Celebes Sea and the coastal waters of Borneo.
