VEGETABLE PRODUCTION IN INDONESIA
There is no equal distribution of the people; 85 million living on Java, and only 49 million on the other islands, distributed over Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and others with a population of 24, 6, 10, and 8.8 million respectively.
About 62% of the population live from agriculture.
Total agricultural land is 13.7 million ha, while home gardens comprise about 2.3 million ha.
In Java there is only 5.0 million ha of agricultural land with 23% of it as home gardens.
The rice area is 7.2 million ha, tubers and dry beans take up 5 million ha, and the area of commercial vegetables is only 0.5 million ha.

Leafy vegetables consist of cabbage (57%) and Chinese cabbage; of the fruit vegetables tomato makes up only 20%, the others being eggplant (Solanum melongena) and cucumbers; the yard-long bean (Vigna unguiculata) occupies 94% of the bean area; potato comprises 78% of the roots, with carrot and radish making up the rest; the red pepper with 58% of its total area dominates the spice vegetables, followed by shallot (32%) garlic and leek.
