INTRODUCTION ON FRUITS IN THE FUTURE
Papers have been presented and discussed on many narrow aspects of specific crops.
Other papers have reviewed developments in broader fields such as growth and reproduction.
Still other papers have dealt with information, with education and extension.
It seems desirable at this stage to have a stocktaking.
This should determine from the material which has been presented, and from the combined knowledge of the assembled delegates, what is the status of each fruit in the many countries; to what extent does it enter commerce or how useful is it to the food supply of the country where it is grown; what is the level of its culture; how nearly do the varieties approach the potential of the genus or the needs of the industry; what are the most serious problems in production and handling, and what are the most promising avenues for progress.
In short, it appears desirable to know what are the problems that challenge the prosperity of each fruit industry, and what developments offer the greatest chances for progress.
It is for this purpose that this sectional programme concludes with a symposium on the future of tropical and subtropical fruits.
