Abstract
The following is a description of IBM Israel Scientific Center’s activities in a joint research project on the design and operation of automated closed system greenhouses, with the Institute for Desert Research of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and the department of Agricultural Engineering at the Technion, Haifa.

The Scientific Center’s present activities in the project are mainly in the following areas:

  • General thermodynamic model

  • Short-wave radiation submodel

These models are used for both closed system and conventional greenhouses.
Future activities will include the control of greenhouses using models.
