Abstract
There is international recognition that horticulture has an important role to play in tourism, as it does in all aspects of human health and well-being.
In recent years it has become evident that there is much to be gained by seeking to understand and fully utilize this role.
A review of the literature in English shows a dearth of research into the multiple roles that horticulture plays in tourism and the potential impact it has on the horticulture industry and the development of communities.
This paper will look at the need for cooperative research from horticulture and tourism professionals, as well as public and private professionals, concerned with such major community issues as economic development, environmental protections/remediation, and human health and welfare.
It will reference some of the research and theories that may help researchers explain the positive roles played by plants in leisure settings and challenge researchers to develop research and theories to address this specific area of people-plant interaction and ensure its development.
