‘GREEN CARE’ IN POLAND – APPLICATION OF HORTICULTURE FOR IMPROVEMENT OF HUMAN LIFE QUALITY AND ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION

Abstract
Green care is a special form of application of horticulture and farming in therapy and social care for the disadvantaged people.
The aim of the study was to characterize model pioneer green care initiatives in Poland.
Data collected during the study visits was used to elaborate case studies of five care farms. Centres studied differ in their area (from 4.5 ha to 1,900 ha), however they all are established and supported by the non-governmental organizations (two of them are also supported by the national health care system). They serve for various clients groups.
Mentally handicapped people are users of the three centres, homeless people are supported by one of them, similarly as the addicted to psychoactive substances.
Three centres are additionally engaged in help for the unemployed inhabitants from the neighboring villages.
Organic production is carried out on all of the farms, as well as food processing.
All centres are involved in vegetable cultivation, and four also in fruit production.
Moreover three centres are actively engaged in the biodiversity conservation, and three in the environ¬ment protection.
