GARDENERS’ ATTITUDES TOWARD HORTICULTURAL ACTIVITIES ON CONDOMINIUM BALCONIES IN TOKYO

Abstract
Urban residents living in condominiums in Tokyo are increasingly interested in their balconies as a potential space for horticultural activities.
We conducted a written survey of both gardeners, who were growing plants, and non-gardeners, who did not grow plants on their condominium balconies in Tokyo.
Results showed that gardeners were mostly middle-aged or elderly housewives.
They have been taking care of various kinds of plants, especially for their joyfulness.
It was also found that gardeners had some difficulties working with soil that had already been used and poor environmental conditions.
On the other hand, non-gardeners likewise answered handling soil in a limited space and poor environmental conditions were difficulties for them to grow plants, although many of them were interested in horticultural activities on their balconies.
Consequently, in order to enjoy horticultural activities more comfortably on balconies, it was suggested that we need to take measures to address those specific problems of balconies, and it will be necessary to breed and create ideal plant varieties suited to balcony-horticulture.
