Abstract
Historically seniors have comprised a small percentage of the Canadian population, but this demographic has undergone a major shift in recent decades.
Seniors have become a larger proportion of the general Canadian population, and as such the numbers of seniors experiencing non-normative aging is growing concomitantly.
In Canada it is this group that is the largest benefactor of horticultural therapy with practice happening most often within a seniors facility.
The face of family is also changing, and most students have not had close or direct contact with seniors.
In this paper the environmental press model is presented as a teaching tool for deepening students’ understanding of the needs of a senior population.
It is also proposed that this model can be applied generally across various client groups.
