MORPHOLOGICAL AND PHYTOCHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF CELASTRUS PANICULATUS GERMPLASM FROM ARAVALLIS OF RAJASTHAN

Abstract
Morphological characterization has been considered as an important tool in description and classification of germplasm.
Four accessions namely CP-6, CP-13, CP-23 and CP-25 were identified as best where higher seed weight (1.89-2.22 g per 100 seeds) and per cent oil (44.0-46.8) contents were observed.
TLC fingerprints showed variations among the accessions with regard to number of bands and Rf values.
In methyl ester derivatives, 5 accessions namely CP-1, CP-10, CP-15, CP-19 and CP-21 showed maximum number (28) of bands whereas maximum 27 bands were observed from methanolic seed extract of CP-1, CP-13 and CP-21. The finger print profile developed from n-hexane extract of seeds and defatted seed methanolic extract showed 75% similarities in different accessions.
The maximum number (25) of bands in n-hexane extract of seeds were observed in CP-1 while the de-fatted seed methanol extract of CP-15 showed maximum 18 bands.
The accessions under study showed differences among each other in type and relative percentage of fatty acids.
No single accession having all the fatty acids in their maximum concentration could be identified.
GC chromatograms of different accessions showed presence of both saturated and unsaturated fatty acids.
The dendogram based on morphological and phytochemical parameters revealed no uniformity in their grouping pattern.
