BREEDING PRIMOCANE FRUITING RED RASPBERRIES AT OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY

The cultivars ‘Heritage,’ ‘Fallred,’ Zeva Herbsternte,’ and selections of OR-US 1347, OR-US 1835, OR-US 1839, and Wyo. 68–21 have been the major primocane fruiting (PF) parents used in the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Oregon State University cooperative red raspberry breeding program to date.
Back crosses to the summer-cropping cultivars ‘Willamette’ and ‘Meeker’ have been made to improve the berry quality.
Selections with good, vigorous, crop-supporting canes and firm fruit that ripen in August have been made from these crosses.
Improvement in fruit size, color and advancing the ripening season are needed to approach the cropping yields and fruit quality of standard summer-cropping cultivars.
