Abstract
The major objectives and breeding procedures of the Washington State University red raspberry breeding program are outlined.
Information on clonal evaluation for fruit rot resistant and for fruit firmness (compression force) and on the inheritance of anthocyanin fruit pigments is summarized.
Data are presented for a clonal evaluation of postharvest Botrytis fruit rot and of fruit firmness. ‘Glen Isla’ and ‘SHRI 20/54’ were resistant and had very firm fruits. ‘Meeker’ and ‘Nootka’ were also resistant but had relatively soft fruits.
A poor association, r = -0.49, between rot and firmness, was found.
A water misting system was installed in the field to apply moisture during bloom and fruit ripening periods.
Misting increased the incidence of both pre- and postharvest Botrytis fruit rot.
The value of postharvest fruit rot determinations in relation to pre-harvest field incidence of fruit rot is discussed.
