Abstract
Under the mild winter conditions of Chapingo, Mexico, the red raspberry ‘Malling Exploit’ shows lack of bud break and extended harvest season due to insufficient cold temperatures during the rest period.
Some formulations of chilling compensators were tested to overcome this problem, considering dates of application and rates.
Four percent Citrolina (oil) + 0.12% DNSBP (Dinitro-secondary-butylphenol) applied from mid February to mid March was efficient in advancing bud break, inducing earliness in harvest and increasing yield.
When the same chemicals were applied about one week before the normal bud break, many buds were killed; this effect was more acute when 3% KNO3 + 1% Thiourea (TU) and 8% oil + 0.12 DNSBP were applied.
The latter killed the cane entirely.
