Abstract
The industrial tomato is grown mainly in the temperate zones of North America and China and in the Mediterranean basin.
The evaluation of general suitability for processing tomato crops in temperate regions requires knowledge of the spatial variation in temperature, which is also used to assess different cultivars and to delimit appropriate zones for production.
This paper analyzes the climate of the main processing tomato producing areas of Spain (Extremadura and Andalucia) with respect to temperature, using daily temperatures collected from 11 climate monitoring stations.
The specified temperature for each cultivar was chosen and from this the variables to be used for a multivariate study and hierarchical analysis were designed to detect the range of climatic factors, in terms of the thermal component, present during the study period, 2001-2016. From the method used, the limiting climatic factors of the crop (frost and high temperatures) were not differentiating elements of the cultivation areas, however, the optimal thermal conditions allow the identification of three groups of year types, and characterizes the study areas, with respect to these three types of years.
