Abstract
Quality is the highest priority for marketing pears grown on the U.S. Pacific Coast in the U.S. Wholesale marketing or auctioning of western U.S. pears in a few large cities has recently changed to individual marketing by brokers selling directly to supermarket chains in a wider distribution of the U.S. Now, buyers demand mixed shipments of several crops or cultivars instead of single crop shipments.
More fresh ‘Bartletts’ will be marketed in the future because of less consumption of processed pears.
Fresh ‘Bartletts’ will compete with mid season pears, ‘Comice’ and ‘Bosc’ because overlapping storage seasons. ‘Bosc’ and ‘Comice’ pears which were considered ethnic fruit sold to European cultures in New York and Chicago are now being marketed in wider U.S. distribution.
Larger production and longer storage life are necessary for these cultivars to be widely distributed in the U.S.
