Abstract
Except for pear decline, very little research has been done on pear virus diseases in North America.
This lack of research may be overlooking severe, unrecognized pathogens that are present or may be introduced.
Some viruses may have little effect on pear production whereas others cause severe losses.
Virus-free nursery improvement programs may eliminate certain viruses from orchards by attrition.
