Abstract
Bromeliads plants have several adaptations to water deficit, such as crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM), which allows better use of water when compared to C3 metabolism.
This study aimed to evaluate the physiological and morphological parameters of Aechmea fasciata (CAM metabolism) and Alcantarea imperialis (C3 metabolism), under different water regimes.
The experiment was carried out with three irrigation treatments: control (irrigated), rehydration (water stress during the first 60 days and rewatering) and stress (not watered) for 90 days.
Destructive and nondestructive morphological and physiological parameters were evaluated at 30-day intervals.
The species showed similar results, with no differences between dry and fresh mass, and a rapid recovery of water contents in leaves upon rehydration treatment.
No change in Fv/Fm was observed between species or among treatments, indicating the efficiency of the PSII photosystem of both species.
Our results showed that A. fasciata and A. imperialis are tolerant to low water availability and present rapid recovery from water stress upon rehydration.
