Breeding studies for low chilling peach genotypes

Abstract
This study was aimed at obtaining low chilling peach, nectarine and platicarpa genotypes by cross breeding methods.
For this aim experiments were carried out during 2012 and 2016 at the University of Cukurova and Pozantı Agricultural Research and Application Center placed in Adana (subtropical climate) and Pozantı (cold climate in highlands). In this research, ‘Maycrest’ peach, ‘Early Silver’, ‘Gransun’, ‘Venus’ and ‘Stark Redgold’ nectarines and ‘Jalousia’ and four other platicarpa (flat peach) genotypes were used in breeding studies.
The plants of all the genotypes were planted by 4×1 m distances.
According to the results, 122 genotypes flowered in 2016 and ‘Venus’ × ‘Gransun’ (V×G) and ‘Jalousia’ × ‘Gransun’ combinations gave the earliest flowering genotypes.
Among them the V×G-6 genotype was the earliest flowering.
Also, the P×M-8 genotype (platicarpa peach No.4 × ‘Maycrest’) and the P×G-1 genotype (platicarpa peach No.4 × ‘Gransun’) were the earliest flowering ones.
In 2016, acceptable fruit set was obtained from 53 genotypes and the fruits were pomologically analyzed.
All the genotypes had red skin color on variable ground color.
Also, white or yellow fruit flesh colors were obtained.
Most of the fruits were clingstone with different fruit shapes and pubescence such as flat peach and nectarines.
