Abstract
The aim of the current study was to evaluate the total phenolic content (TPC) and free radical scavenging activity of the extracts of Ficus carica L. (Moraceae). The biological material consisted of fruits and leaves from several Romanian fig local genotypes.
Afterwards, the samples were subjected to extraction using sonication method on ice bath.
Total phenolic content was achieved by using an adapted method, with Folin-Ciocâlteau reagent.
The free radical scavenging activity was determined using free radical 2 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and calculated as Inhibition % (I%). The results clearly demonstrate that the extracts have high potential of phenolics and by default antioxidant effect.
Higher values were found in leaf extracts than in fruit ones.
