Abstract
With the aim of studying the productivity of seven all-male genotypes of green asparagus of Italian origin (Italo, Zeno, Eros, Ercole, H-668, Marte and Gioive obtained by CRA, Italia) versus the North American control cultivar UC-157, a field trial initiated in November 2006 via seedlings in the Experimental Field of the Facultad de Agronomía-UNCBPA (36°48S, 59°51W) was evaluated in its fifteenth year of production.
The following traits were evaluated: total fresh commercial production (PFCT) in t ha‑1 and the corresponding production of long (22 cm) and short (17 cm) spears (PFC-L and PFC-C, respectively); total number of spears (NTT), including waste, plus total commercial number (NTCT) and the corresponding number of long and short spears (NTC-L and NTC-C, respectively); unit weight (PPT-L); caliber distribution (J: Jumbo; XL: Extra Large; L: Large; M: Medium; S: Small; A: Asparagine); waste (DE: sprouted; MC: unacceptably short; OD: other defects). Analysis of variance ANOVA-LSD (P≥0.05) was carried out.
In overall mean performance, the set of Italian genotypes outperformed UC-157 in t ha‑1 and in spear number.
The main defect was sprouting. Ercole, Gioive and Eros stood out for their productivity performance and quality.
For caliber, Gioive was the superior genotype, as observed in previous years.
