Assessment of technical innovations for greenhouses: modelling of a horizontal two-screens system

Abstract
The SERRES+ project has been initiated with the objective of developing a new and fossil-energy-free greenhouse system adapted to Northwestern France.
Greenhouses being characterized by highly coupled phenomena, equipment and cultivation practices shall be evaluated as a whole, in conjunction with the crop itself: for this reason, a system approach will be applied to analyse combinations of solutions based on energy and water saving as well as on crop growth performance criteria.
As a first step, this work aims at the modelling of an entire tomato production in an experimental 1000 m2 greenhouse located near Nantes (France) based on the Greenhouses Modelica library from Liège University (Belgium). The scope of this paper is limited to the description of the modelling of a sub-system made of two horizontal actuated asymmetric screens.
In particular, a wavelength independent multilayer method is used to model the screens effects on radiations propagation.
As well, heat and mass transfer model through their fabric is considered, with a focus set on the configuration where screens overlap each other.
The model is not dedicated to the greenhouse study case but can be re-used to evaluate various horizontal screens combinations and properties, e.g. in the context of designing new greenhouses.
Simulations in a simplified configuration during 4 months winter nights provide results that are consistent with the literature.
