Abstract

The potential of pyroligneous acid (PA) and municipal solid waste (MSW) compost as biostimulant and growing medium amendment, respectively, is amply reported in the literature.
However, the combined effect of these clean technologies on strawberry (Fragaria ananassa Duch. Albion) plants is unknown.
A greenhouse pot-experiment was performed to determine strawberry plant response to varying rates of foliar application of PA (0, 2, and 4% v/v) and MSW compost (0, 200, and 400 g pot^-1). The macro- and micro-elements composition of the MSW compost was higher compared to those of the PA. Strawberry plant growth was mostly increased by the application of MSW compost and its interaction with PA. An increase in the application rates of both MSW compost and PA significantly (P<0.05) increased relative leaf chlorophyll content of the strawberry plants.
Chlorophyll fluorescence index revealed stressful conditions at Fv/Fm <0.78 for chlorotic plants that did not receive MSW compost, irrespective of PA application rate.
Comparatively, leaf tissue macro-nutrients sufficiency requirement recommended for strawberry was met upon application of 400 g MSW compost except for N. The interaction effects of MSW compost and PA on plant growth, and fruit production were highly significant (P<0.01). In conclusion, the combination of MSW compost and PA enriched the growing medium compared to the control treatments.
Therefore, plants treated with the 400 g MSW compost in combination with 2 or 4% PA treatment gave the highest number of berries and fresh fruit yield.
Future work must focus on drench application of PA and fruits edible quality.
