Abstract
The mountains of Kazakhstan are a center of biodiversity for many important fruit and nut tree species, including wild apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.). The value of the wild apricot gene pool consists in a commercial valuable characteristic such as fruits with high bioactive substances as polyphenols, ascorbic acid, pectic substances, and diverse colors and flavors, as well as later-flowering, late-maturing fruit, and drought, frost tolerance.
This study was conducted in order to select valuable forms of wild apricot from two gorges (Kotir bulak, Kongur Istvan) in Ili Alatau mountain.
Phenological observations during two years (2018, 2019) in wild apricot populations were conducted.
Pomological parameters (fruit, stone weight, size, fruit shape, fruit and flesh colors, flesh texture, fruit taste, flesh/stone ratio, separation of a stone, aroma), and chemical parameters (total ascorbic acid, total phenolic content, total leucoanthocyanidin), antioxidant capacity were evaluated.
In fruit forests in Ili Alatau apricots exhibited a wide variation on most of the fruit and tree morphological and biochemical characteristics.
Total polyphenols, ascorbic acid, antioxidant capacity were the highest in most forms of wild apricot than cultivar NK. Our results showed that these valuable apricot forms may also be effectively introduction into ex situ and in breeding programs to produce new cultivars with improved content of bioactive substances.
