Biostimulant effect of seaweed-derived biostimulants in soft fruit production under reduced fertigation

Abstract
Use of biostimulants in commercial horticulture has been promoted as one of key approaches for sustainable food production.
Biostimulants are claimed to have the potential to reduce resource inputs – such as water and mineral fertilisers – and increase tolerance to abiotic stresses.
We investigated the effect of several seaweed-derived biostimulants applied to strawberry and raspberry crops grown under fully fertigated commercial conditions and under reduced fertigation.
Fruit yield, fruit quality, plant biomass, photosynthetic parameters, stem water potential, stem/leaf growth and intrinsic water use efficiency (delta 13C isotope) were measured.
The tested biostimulants did not have any significant effects on measured plant growth/development parameters.
There appeared to be a slight increase in gas exchange performance in strawberry treated with ASCO-N2, but those did not translate into yield benefits.
Reduced fertigation in strawberry by ca 50% (vs. current commercial practice) did not significantly reduce fruit yield indicating that improving fertigation use efficiency is possible.
